I had such a good time in Seattle. I like the rain, the coffee shops, the fact that every day is dress-down day, that every cafe has wireless internet. We really got around. We went to just about all of Seattle’s coolest neighbourhoods: Capitol Hill, Kent, Fremont, Georgetown, Queen Anne, U District, Belltown, Ballard, [...]

My last breakfast in the States was Granola, and a very english cup of tea (made with teabags someone in my family gave as a Christmas gift in a previous year, I think).
I had no lunch to speak of, just a piece of leftover prime rib between a couple of slices of sourdough bread, smeared [...]

Granola for breakfast again. More coffee. More sushi for lunch.
Sushi Land again, but it’s nearby and it’s so good. I had salmon, tuna, prawn and unidentified fish nigiri, one seaweed salad and a few edamami, which are blanched fresh green beans in their pods. I got a little dessert, too, a plate of three bean paste [...]

Granola again for breakfast, and a cup of tea. Then we went to Starbucks, which would not have been my choice but we were meeting with my father in law and a friend of his, and they come here every week, so this is an acceptable visit. Also, I had been given a ten dollar [...]

I started the day with granola. I was checking the label, and it turns out to be not nearly as healthy as the ruddy-cheeked farmer on the box would have me believe. It’s full of sugar, and quite a lot of fat, along with the oats, but it’s sold as a good thing because it’s [...]

Christmas day! My father in law cooked up a plate of eggs benedict (and eggs florentine for my vegetarian wife) and it was delicious, the best I’ve had since I went to the Black Diamond Bakery – which is some way south of here, in Black Diamond, of course – about three years ago. It [...]

My mother in law has many virtues. I won’t even try to list them here because there are simply too many. Except to mention that she made me waffles for breakfast on christmas eve. She prepared the waffle batter (I don’t know the recipe), and made up some fixins: freshly whipped cream, blueberries and maple [...]

Senor Moose came recommended by a friend. It’s just up the street from his new-built yuppie condo in Ballard, on Leary Avenue, and it’s now my favourite breakfast restaurant in Seattle. We walked in on an icy cold and damp Sunday morning, just minutes before the brunch rush, and we were hit by a warm [...]

West Seattle is not a suburb, but it’s separated from the downtown area by a stretch of water and feels somewhat detached from the rest of the city, because it is. We were staying on the western side of the peninsula, away from the city, and two minutes walk from a park with a cliff [...]

More flax organic cereal for breakfast. I’m starting to think I may have been deceived by the pseudoscientific medicinal claims of this foodstuff. They’re really just self-important cornflakes, and they don’t fill me up at all. I’m going to switch to granola.
Lunch was at Thai-ger Room in the university district. We were planning to get [...]
